Canadensis Presents: A Virtual Garden Tour of JARDINS DE MÉTIS-REFORD GARDENS

A Virtual Tour of Jardins de Métis-Reford Gardens, a national historic site on the St. Lawrence. Director Alexander Reford is our guide.

About this event

We love bringing garden people together! With all the limited travel opportunities right now, the Canadian Botanical Garden Society (CBGS) has decided to bring the gardens to you in collaboration with the Canadian Garden Council. We have invited our colleagues at Destination/Botanical Gardens, located along the Canadian Garden Route, to offer virtual garden presentations that you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home.

Our Virtual Garden Tours begin on Thursday, May 27th with a tour of Jardins de Métis-Reford Gardens with guest presenter, Alexander Reford, the Director of the Gardens. (Our full list of gardens and guest presenters for the first series of virtual presentations is listed below.)

The Garden: Les Jardins de Métis (Reford Gardens)

Jardins de Métis-Reford Gardens is a national historic site on the St. Lawrence River in eastern Québec. Created by Elsie Reford from 1926-1958, the gardens are one of Québec’s leading tourism attractions. The gardens cover a 200-acre site. At the heart of the gardens is the historic Estevan Lodge, built by Lord Mount Stephen in 1887 as a fishing camp. Today the lodge welcomes visitors to its dining rooms, exhibitions, and museum.

Guest Presenter: Alexander Reford

Elsie Reford’s great-grandson, Alexander Reford, has been the director of the Reford Gardens since 1995 and oversees their conservation and development. Trained as a historian at Oxford University and the University of Toronto, he has written many articles and books on the history of Canada. He chairs the Association des Jardins du Québec (Québec Garden Association) and is the co-founder of the International Garden Festival, which takes place every year at the Reford Gardens.
