🍁 Happy Canada Day from Canadensis! 🌿

In plant names, canadensis means “of Canada” – a nod to species discovered here or deeply rooted in our landscapes. Think Tsuga canadensis (Eastern Hemlock) or Sambucus canadensis (Elderberry).

At Canadensis Botanical Garden, we’re growing more than plants – we’re cultivating a vision: a national garden for Canada, right here in Ottawa. One that celebrates biodiversity, supports pollinators, honours Indigenous knowledge, and reflects the beauty of this country from coast to coast to coast.

Today, as we mark Canada Day, we reflect on what it means to be of Canada – and how a garden can help tell that story.

    On a rainy August morning, Canadensis had the opportunity to visit the gardens at Ambleside 2 and see firsthand what this community has created together.

    Canadensis Chair Gerry Lajeunesse visited with Norma Lamont, a former Canadensis Board member and current CBGS member, and Jim Young, who shared his knowledge of the gardens and introduced us to the work of the Ambleside Men’s Shed.

    Musical Marble Run!

    What happens when a marble run becomes a musical instrument?
    Find out on Saturday, August 1, when Canadensis Garden presents Musical Marble Run, a free, hands-on experience for all ages.
    A giant wooden marble run will be set up inside the geodesic dome. As marbles travel through the course, they strike tuned metal chimes, creating melodies along the way. Every marble follows a different path, making each musical experience unique.
